In my words

A crown has two jobs. It has to look like it belongs in your smile, and it has to meet the opposing teeth correctly every time you bite. The second job is the one patients never see and the one that decides whether a crown is comfortable for years or a nuisance from day one.

Crowns and bridges are the everyday work of a prosthodontist. I spend the extra time on the shade, the contour at the gumline and the bite, because those are what you live with.

You may need a crown or bridge if

  • A tooth has a large filling and not much tooth left around it
  • A tooth is cracked, fractured or badly worn
  • A tooth has had root canal treatment and needs protection
  • You are missing a tooth and have healthy teeth on either side of the gap
  • An older crown has chipped, loosened or no longer matches

How it goes

    Evaluation

    We check the tooth, the gums around it and your bite, and talk through materials - all-ceramic, porcelain fused to metal, or metal.

  2. 02

    Preparation and a temporary

    The tooth is shaped, an impression or scan is taken, and you leave with a well-fitting temporary.

  3. 03

    Made to match

    Your crown or bridge is made to the shape, shade and bite we recorded.

  4. 04

    Fit and follow-up

    It is tried in, adjusted and cemented. If anything feels high or odd afterwards, I want to know - it is a quick fix.

What are crowns made of?

All-ceramic or porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or metal alloys. Front teeth usually call for all-ceramic for the most natural look; back teeth need to withstand heavier forces. I will recommend a material for your tooth and explain why.

Bridge or implant - which is better?

Neither, universally. A bridge is quicker and avoids surgery, but it relies on the neighboring teeth. An implant stands on its own and leaves those teeth untouched. We will go through both for your situation.

How long does a crown take?

Typically two visits a couple of weeks apart, with a temporary crown in between.

My crown feels "high." Is that normal?

A new crown should settle within a few days. If you are still aware of it when you bite, call the office. It usually takes a few minutes to adjust, and leaving it can make the tooth sore.
